Self-Acupressure for Hot Flashes

Note: This is a very early post in a larger series on acupressure. We have a general introduction to acupressure here that also offers links to other posts to help you use acupressure for other conditions.

In our previous posts, we’ve talked about treating hot flashes with acupuncture and with herbs. Today we’re going to finish this subject by looking at some self-care that you can do for the treatment of hot flashes. After all, acupuncture and herbs are great, but when hormones are particularly erratic one day and hot flashes are severe, what can do you do right then to help calm the heat?

The Points
There are many different points that can be used for hot flashes. Today we’re going to look at three. Images are given for the points below. Though the images will only show one side of the body, the points are the same on either side.

Heart 6
HT-6 Acupuncture Point
This point is found on the inside of the pinkie-finger side of the wrist, about one-half of the width of the thumb back from the wrist crease. This point is very commonly used when hot flashes are accompanied with sweating, or when night sweats are common.

Spleen 6
SP-6 Acupuncture Point
This point is one hand’s span up from the highest point of the inside of the ankle, just behind the bone. When you run your finger along the edge of the bone you will typically fall into a soft depression where this point is. This point is used for all kinds of hot flashes.

Kidney 1
KD-1 Acupuncture Point
This point is found on the bottom of the foot between the second and third metatarsal bones. This point is good to use when a hot flash is accompanied with a flushed face and more heat in the top portions of the body.

How You Use The Points
To give yourself acupressure, apply pressure at the point with your thumb or finger. The pressure should be firm but not painful. The thumb or finger can be circled around in the area in a clockwise motion for at least 5-10 seconds. If you find that applying pressure does not help, first check to be sure you have the correct point location, and then press into the point from a different angle.

Compared with acupuncture, acupressure is a relatively mild therapy. For better effectiveness, as you press into the point envision that you are pressing through the skin & muscle tissue deep into the body, as though your pressure is guiding the hot flash back down into the core of the body where it belongs.

Best of luck, and stay cool!
