Summer has arrived. Last weekend it may have felt like winter but there is no question, the heat is here. One thing that I have been struggling with this time of year is sugar. I love sweet and in this heat I love cold. If you’re anything like me and need some help cutting back on the sugar and fat of ice cream, here is an idea or two for something cool and sweet in the summer.
Frozen Yogurt
Try making your own frozen yogurt. This may sound like a project but it’s something that doesn’t require a whole lot of effort. Use this recipe as a starting point and play with it until it is what you want.
- 2 cups of Greek yogurt.
- 1 cup frozen blackberries
- 2 tablespoons of honey
Blend the ingredients together and freeze it for an hour or two. Feel free to try using strawberries, blueberries or any in-season fruit.
Peanut Butter Cookies
If you’re a big cookie eater try out this cookie recipe.
- 1 cup peanut butter
- 1 cup honey
- 1 TSP baking soda
- 1 egg
Mix the peanut butter and honey first then add in the egg and baking soda. Bake for 10 minutes on 350 degrees.
Fruit Infusions
If you are someone who likes flavor in your beverages try fruit infusions. Cut up some fruit and let them sit in a pitcher of water overnight. This flavors your water and when you get to the bottom you can eat the fruit!
There are a lot of different things you can do to keep your dessert good for you. To keep it healthy try to keep it fresh, local and organic. Instead of refined sugar try to substitute local honey or maple syrup. As with anything it is still important to keep things in moderation. Dessert should be fun so play around and find what works for you!
