Acupuncture for Bladder Issues

It can be awfully embarrassing to talk about, but bladder problems do happen from time to time. And when they happen to you, it can feel like it consumes your life. Luckily, acupuncture can be helpful for a lot of bladder problems. Here’s some info about different issues that we have helped patients with.

Overactive bladder

In these people, the nerves that control urination can involuntarily contract or signal the brain that there is a need to urinate.

Acupuncture can help with overactive bladder. Treatment is typically geared toward trying to regulate muscle tone around the pelvic floor.

(A somewhat similar condition is nocturia, which is when you need to wake multiple times at night to pee. This often tracks back to issues with diabetes or bladder retention. Acupuncture can help in similar ways: regulating both pelvic floor muscle tension & blood biochemistry.)

Bladder pain

Bladder pain syndrome (BPS) is also known as interstitial cystitis. BPS is when you have pain and pressure that builds up as the need to pee increases. People also have symptoms similar to a UTI, but without having an actual infection. For some, BPS can come and go, but with others it is a constant part of their life.

Acupuncture can help BPS too. BPS usually improves after controlling inflammation of the bladder and freeing the bladder wall & surrounding muscles of fascial adhesion & muscle restriction. Acupuncture is great at both of these things.

UTIs

Urinary tract infections are very common. Luckily you don’t have to suffer if you have one. By many of the same approaches talked about above, acupuncture can help with controlling the inflammation and pain from UTIs. Acupuncture can also help by boosting the immune system to help the infection resolve more quickly.
