When it comes to weight loss and dieting, it can often feel like a real drag. It is so easy to look at the path ahead of you and only see the work and sacrifice. What if losing weight could be an adventure; what if it could be fun?
Focus on what you’ll gain instead of what you’re giving up.
Have you ever tried going on a diet and suddenly all you can think of is cookies? Do you only see all the things you can’t do anymore? Instead of thinking about that cake you can’t have, think about the increased energy you’ll gain, the improved sleep, the decrease in pain.
Find a type of exercise you enjoy.
To lose weight in a healthy way, it’s important not only to eat well but to exercise. This becomes a lot easier when you have fun while doing it. Do you enjoy hiking? Yoga? How about strength training or walking? None of the above? Try working out with a friend or trainer to stay motivated.
Experiment with new foods.
Despite looking on the bright side of things do you still find yourself dreaming about cookies? Do you have trouble finding good food to eat? Take a little time and make a list of foods you can eat. When you go to the grocery store pick up some vegetables you haven’t tried before. Try out some new recipes. Most importantly, eat food you enjoy. Even healthy food should taste good. As with exercise, you’re more likely to stick with it if you enjoy it.
Don’t go it alone.
Often we rely on willpower in our quest to lose weight and get healthier. We’ll grit our teeth and do what we think we can. This can work for a little while but it is hard to sustain. Work with a friend, a trainer or health coach. This will give you someone beyond yourself to be accountable, and also it will give you a support system. Having someone to share your journey with will help you to be more successful in your journey toward a healthier you.
